All Winds American Mahjong Sydney was started by one of the co-founders of Mahjong East to cater for the ever increasing demand of people wanting to learn American style Mahjong.

The classes are taught by Simone Selby, a physiotherapist who has been playing American Mahjong for 4 years and teaching for 2.

Simone loves how American Mahjong creates new friendships and exercises the brain. She loves being part of Sydney's American Mahjong community and looks forward to welcoming new players to the table.

At All Winds American Mahjong Sydney, we believe that Mahjong is more than just a game.

American vs Hong Kong Mahjong

What is the difference?

If you've played mahjong with family or seen it in Hong Kong, American Mahjong will look familiar at first. The tiles are much the same, but how you win and how the game starts are quite different.

American Mahjong uses 152 tiles, including eight jokers. Players must build a hand that matches one on the National Mah Jongg League card, which changes every year, and each game starts with a tile swap called the Charleston.

Hong Kong mahjong uses 144 tiles and no jokers. Players win with four sets and a pair, and points are scored in fan.
